Recent research by UK vehicle-scrappage company Scrap Car Comparison (SCC) has examined how AI chatbots handle car repair and maintenance queries, with results that could influence how motorists approach independent garages.
The study tested three major AI platforms — OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, and Microsoft Copilot — using questions ranging from everyday vehicle faults to highly specific owner scenarios.
Queries included straightforward issues such as engine warning lights and brake checks, as well as detailed cases like a 2010 Renault Clio with 120,000 miles, a slipping clutch, non-functioning air conditioning, and a failed MOT handbrake.
AI-generated advice was evaluated by Tim Singer, a workshop manager at BMS Cars, an SCC partner garage. Each answer was rated on safety, accuracy, legality, and usefulness.
“I was genuinely surprised at the quality,” said Tim. “The AI provided information that could help motorists make more informed decisions but it’s still no substitute for professional guidance.”
Among the platforms, ChatGPT gave the most comprehensive and nuanced answers, Google AI offered concise guidance, and Microsoft Copilot leaned toward a conversational style.
However, some AI suggestions encouraged motorists to attempt repairs themselves, a move that could lead to mistakes, safety risks, or misdiagnoses.
Tim’s advice is clear: “AI can be helpful, but it might give drivers a false sense of confidence. Garages are still essential, not just for repairs, but for expert insight that AI cannot fully replicate.”
In short…
– AI may change how customers research vehicle problems, but the role of professional garages remains central.
– AI is a tool, not a replacement for expertise. Garages remain essential for safety, accuracy, and complex diagnostics.
– While there are fears that vehicle owners might attempt repairs using AI guidance, Garage Matters recognises that AI developments could help technicians streamline the diagnostic process.
– Forward-thinking workshops can explore AI to enhance efficiency, reduce diagnostic time, and improve customer service.
