New Valeo eAxle signals the future of affordable hybrid 4WD

Valeo Service UK is highlighting the next stage of hybrid vehicle development with the commercial launch of its new 48V 2-Speed eAxle with Smart Dog-Clutch, an OE technology breakthrough designed to make advanced electric drive systems more accessible for mass-market vehicles.

Already selected by Dacia for its new Hybrid-G 150 powertrain, the innovative 48V eAxle will debut on the Dacia Duster and Bigster, with the Striker model to follow. For independent workshops and distributors, the technology provides an early insight into the hybrid systems expected to enter the vehicle parc as manufacturers continue to balance electrification, efficiency and affordability.

As emissions requirements continue to increase pressure on conventional four-wheel-drive systems, Valeo’s electric drive solution provides manufacturers with a more efficient alternative to traditional mechanical 4×4 components. By combining electric rear-wheel drive with a compact 48V architecture, the system helps deliver improved efficiency while maintaining the capability expected from SUV applications.

“Innovations like the 48V 2-Speed eAxle highlight how vehicle manufacturers are scaling hybrid technology for high-volume, mass-market platforms,” said Andy Swann, Managing Director at Valeo Service UK. “For our motor factor and workshop partners across the UK, this offers a valuable look at the vehicles that will define independent repair over the next decade.”

Developed in collaboration with Renault Group and Valeo, the 2-speed architecture addresses a long-standing challenge in electric drive systems: balancing low-speed torque with high-speed efficiency.

At low speeds, the short gear ratio delivers maximum rear wheel torque of 1,800 Nm, providing the capability required for demanding terrain and SUV applications. At higher speeds, the system shifts to a longer gear ratio, improving efficiency during cruising at speeds of up to 140 km/h.

The Smart Dog-Clutch system uses software-synchronised engagement technology to deliver this flexibility while maintaining a compact and cost-effective design suitable for high-volume vehicle platforms.

Weighing just 41 kg, it delivers a peak output of 31 hp, making it the most powerful 48V rear electric powertrain currently available. Optimised software strategies also allow vehicles equipped with the system to achieve up to 60% of urban driving in fully electric mode.

The launch reinforces Valeo’s position as an OE technology partner supporting the transition towards electrified mobility.

As these vehicles begin to enter the independent aftermarket, Valeo Service UK will continue to support distributors and workshops with OE-quality components, technical information and training to help technicians confidently maintain the latest vehicle technologies.
