Cleevely Group is bringing its ‘At Ease With EV’ practical training course back to its Cheltenham workshop on Saturday 7 November, following sustained demand from independent garages looking to turn EV qualifications into profitable workshop work.
The one-day course is aimed at technicians and garage owners who already hold IMI Level 2, 3 or 4 EV qualifications but have had limited opportunities to put their training into practice.
Led by EV specialist Matt Cleevely and technical trainer Alistair Finch, the course is designed to bridge the gap between classroom-based certification and the practical demands of working on electric vehicles in an independent workshop.
Delegates will work on real-world vehicles in a controlled workshop environment, gaining practical experience in EV diagnostics, testing and repair, working on various EV components both on and off vehicles.
The need for practical EV skills is growing as the number of electric vehicles entering the UK aftermarket continues to increase. More than 2.15 million fully electric vehicles are now on UK roads, representing more than six per cent of cars in service. New BEVs are consistently accounting for more than a quarter of monthly registrations, while used EV transactions have risen by 67 per cent year on year.
Freshly updated, the course places a strong emphasis on real-world fault-finding and mechanical teardown, covering AC and DC charging faults, motor-generator windings and practical testing, motor internals and reduction gearboxes, and high-voltage battery pack assessment. The programme also addresses the commercial side of EV repair, with practical guidance on pricing and profitability, supported by open group discussion throughout the day.
“Having the qualification is an important first step, but confidence comes from using those skills on the vehicles and faults you’re likely to see in the workshop,” said Matt Cleevely, founder of Cleevely EV. “We developed this training around the needs of independent garages. The aim is to give technicians the practical experience to diagnose, test and repair EV systems safely and effectively, rather than turning work away or replacing complete units when a component-level repair may be possible.”
As a growing number of these vehicles move out of manufacturer warranty, independent garages are increasingly likely to encounter EV repair and diagnostic work that they need the skills and confidence to handle themselves.
Places are limited to maintain a hands-on format and give delegates time to work through the practical elements of the course.
Tickets cost £295 + VAT per delegate and include lunch, refreshments and a certificate of attendance that can contribute towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
