DVLA targets digital MOT reminders and number plate suppliers in latest business plan

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has set out its operational priorities for 2026/27.

According to the 2026/27 commitments, DVLA plans to launch an integrated service by December 2026 that allows motorists to sign up for digital MOT reminders directly through their personal ‘Driver and vehicles account’.

The agency has also confirmed plans to consult on and tighten the UK number plate supply chain.

In response to surging vehicle cloning rates and illegal plate designs, DVLA stated it is evaluating “changes to improve and enhance the number plate supply regime”.

This will involve stronger compliance checks on registered plate suppliers, potential revisions to supplier registration fees, and joint enforcement operations with local police forces and Trading Standards.

Looking slightly further down the line, DVLA confirmed it is accelerating systems development alongside HM Treasury to begin collecting Vehicle Excise Duty on electric vehicles from April 2028.

While still two years away, the integration of EVs into standard taxation marks another step in standardising EV operating costs with internal combustion vehicles.

On general administration, the agency has committed to dispatching 99% of online vehicle registration certificates (V5Cs) within three working days, up from its previous 95% target.
