Average UK car age nears 10 years old: what it means for workshops

The average age of cars on UK roads has now reached a record high of nearly 10 years, Department for Transport data shows.

With older vehicles more prone to unplanned repairs, and RAC research shows that four-in-10 drivers (39%) had their main car off the road for a day or more over the last year.

Most drivers (68%) were without a vehicle for two days or more, with over 10% going a week or longer without wheels.

Unsurprisingly, 86% described being without their car as inconvenient, and younger drivers and those in rural areas were hardest hit.

For independent garages, this represents a clear opportunity. As cars age and maintenance costs rise, drivers are increasingly willing to pay for reliable, convenient servicing and repairs.

The RAC report highlights that 76% of drivers saw maintenance and repair costs rise last year, making them more conscious of preventative care and the value of skilled technicians.

RAC Mobile Servicing team leader Nick Mullender explained that the rise in older cars is behind the surge in demand for mobile mechanics, whose bookings quadrupled to nearly 100,000 last year.

He said: “Servicing cars at the correct interval and fixing issues as they arise, whether at a garage or on the drive, is by far the best advice. Those who delay repairs often face more expensive problems later.”
