Dean Lomas talks garage growth, cash flow, and apprenticeships on The Blend Podcast

Independent garage owners are encouraged to listen to the latest episode of The Blend Podcast, where Dean Lomas of DC Lomas in Cheshire shares his candid insights on running a growing garage business, managing cash flow, and mentoring apprentices.

Dean joins host Mike Ruff to discuss his upcoming presentation at The Blend on Saturday 18th October. Titled “The Roller Coaster of 2024 and 2025”, the conference session will explore the highs, lows, and unexpected challenges of garage ownership.

“Running a garage is never straightforward,” said Dean. “We’ve had cash flow challenges, staff pressures, and even a tribunal-type situation to navigate, but we’re all in the same boat. My presentation at The Blend is about sharing that journey and showing that independent garages can support each other through the ups and downs.”

During the episode, Dean offers practical advice for garage owners considering expansion, including raising prices early to maintain cash flow, investing in ramps and staff to meet demand, and ensuring growth never compromises service quality.

Dean is widely recognised in the industry for his commitment to developing young talent. He explained how apprentices in his business are given meaningful responsibilities and hands-on guidance that combines technical skills with practical life lessons.

“Patience, honesty, and understanding each individual’s needs are key,” said Dean. “We’re not just training technicians, we’re building people who can grow with the business and enjoy long, fulfilling careers.”

Dean also highlighted shortcomings in the current educational system for automotive students and stressed the need for structured, practical apprenticeships.

Looking ahead to The Blend in October, Dean promises a session filled with insights, stories, and unique supplier gifts for attendees.

“Dean is one of many big industry names to appear on The Blend Podcast,” said Mike Ruff. “You can listen to The Blend Podcast on all major platforms, and with a huge back catalogue of conversations covering every aspect of the independent garage industry, there’s plenty of practical advice and inspiring stories waiting for you.”

Dean will join a strong line-up of speakers sharing real-world experiences on stage at The Blend’s annual garage conference on 18th October in Birmingham. A very limited number of tickets to attend are still available online here: https://www.theblend.events/tickets.
