Just days after confirming the 1st April go-live date for SERMI in the UK, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) has announced an “overwhelmingly positive” response from vehicle manufacturers.
19 major automotive brands have committed to the scheme, ensuring that independent garages will have a standardised route to access security-related data for a significant portion of the UK car parc from day one.
The rapid uptake is being seen as a major vote of confidence in the UK implementation of the scheme.
Who is on board with SERMI?
The vehicle manufacturers confirmed so far are:
– Ford
– Toyota
– Jaguar Land Rover
– Nissan
– Stellantis brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, and Vauxhall.
The IGA expects further manufacturers to follow suit in the coming weeks.
Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, said: “The response from vehicle manufacturers has been extremely positive. To have 19 on board within days of notifying them of UK approval shows just how important SERMI is to the future of our sector.
“This scheme will positively change the operational capability of independent garages and provide something we simply haven’t had in the UK before.”

Warning on DBS check times
With the April deadline approaching, the IGA is issuing a practical warning to garages planning to apply.
The accreditation process requires technicians and business owners to undergo government DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks.
These can take up to two weeks, and in some cases longer, to process. Garages are being urged to factor this lead time into their planning to ensure they are ready for the rollout.
Is SERMI right for you?
Despite the momentum, the IGA cautioned that SERMI will not be relevant to every single business.
Garages are advised to assess their own operations before applying.
James added: “It’s essential that garages are secure in their own minds about whether SERMI is something they need.
“Our role is to continue providing clear and accurate information so businesses can make an informed choice that’s right for them.”
The IGA has confirmed it will continue to release guidance to help the sector navigate the adoption process as the scheme progresses.
