IGA steps up fight against counterfeit parts

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is reinforcing its partnership with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in support of the national ‘Fake Always Breaks’ campaign, reminding independent garages of the ongoing dangers posed by counterfeit vehicle parts.

The call to action comes following the high-profile seizure of more than £100,000 worth of fake automotive components in South Gloucestershire, including spark plugs, filters, and sensors.

While the incident has been widely reported, the IGA is using it as a timely reminder that the threat from counterfeit parts remains constant and that workshops must remain vigilant, particularly as demand for replacement parts rises during the busy winter service period.

Counterfeit components are often made from inferior materials and bypass the rigorous safety testing required of genuine parts.

As a result, they are far more likely to fail, putting drivers, passengers, and other road users at serious risk.

For garages, fitting these parts can also jeopardise their reputation and even lead to liability issues.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said: “Independent workshops are on the frontline of vehicle safety.

“This recent seizure is a stark reminder of the risks counterfeit parts pose to motorists and garages alike.

“By staying alert and sourcing only from trusted suppliers, garages can safeguard their customers, their businesses, and Britain’s roads.”

The IGA continues to work closely with the IPO to ensure that garages have the knowledge and tools they need to identify and report counterfeit parts.

“Workshops are advised to look out for warning signs such as vague product descriptions, poor-quality packaging, missing safety information, and unfamiliar or misspelled branding.

With the winter service season just around the corner, the IGA is urging all independent garages to familiarise themselves with the IPO’s guidance and remain vigilant when sourcing and fitting parts.

Protecting vehicles with genuine components is not just a safety issue, it is an essential part of maintaining trust with customers and safeguarding the long-term success of the business.
