The Car Edition: Jaguar XE timing chain job escalates to £6k engine rebuild

The team at The Car Edition recently documented exactly how a Jaguar XE job escalated into a £6,228 engine overhaul.

When the 104,000-mile XE arrived with a knocking sound, Owen from The Car Edition started with the basics: the dipstick was bone-dry, and the oil filter was filled with “grinding paste”, fine metallic debris.

While the car was booked for a timing chain, these initial findings suggested the lack of lubrication had already done terminal damage to the top end.

Handed over to specialist Akos, the teardown revealed that 12 out of 16 rocker arms had significant play.

For those working on these units, remember: Ingenium camshaft lobes are pressed onto hollow shafts.

The “impact” from worn rockers can actually cause these lobes to shift. Consequently, the team had to replace the entire cam assembly, rockers, and lifters to ensure a lasting repair.

Perhaps the most frustrating part of the job involved the brand-new OEM components.

A genuine JLR cam carrier arrived with unfinished threads, forcing the technician to manually tap and re-thread 20 holes.

The team also flagged that sealant on genuine gaskets often sticks to the cardboard packaging, requiring meticulous cleaning to avoid post-repair leaks.

The customer was presented with a final bill of £6,228.44. Even then, the team advised that the turbocharger (the original source of the oil loss) and the EGR system would still need attention down the line.
