Specialist recommissions legendary Group B icons for the road

UK specialist Tolman Engineering is breathing new life into some of the most iconic Group B homologation specials, helping enthusiasts enjoy these legendary cars as dynamic road vehicles rather than static collectibles.

With two successful projects already completed, the company is now expanding its recommissioning services and producing bespoke parts to keep these rare machines on the road.

For enthusiasts, Group B represented a golden era of rallying between 1982 and 1986.

Manufacturers such as Lancia, Ford, Peugeot, MG, and Citroën built small runs, typically 200 road-going versions, of their competition cars.

Designed for performance rather than refinement, these cars were often raw and challenging to drive.

After the category’s ban in 1986, many were cannibalised for other motorsport disciplines, converted into replicas, or left underused due to scarce OEM support.

Building on the success of its Tolman Edition programme, Tolman Engineering has now turned its attention to revitalising these road derivatives.

Following a meticulous recommissioning of a 1,200-mile Ford RS200, the company has completed a Peugeot 205 T16, which will feature at Hagerty’s Club House during Bicester Heritage’s October Scramble on 5 October.

A Renault 5 Turbo 2 is next in line, arriving at Tolman’s workshop this autumn.

Tolman’s work goes beyond basic restoration. The company has developed the first new parts specifically for Group B models, improving reliability, performance, and driving enjoyment.

For the Peugeot 205 T16, bespoke parts include a cambelt timing and pulley kit, front anti-roll bar bushes, and CNC-formed coolant pipes.

The Ford RS200 benefits from an ECU upgrade to enhance driveability and reliability, which is now available for any fuel-injected Group B car.

Transmission rebuilds, damper refurbishment, and sourcing of original tyres from Michelin further ensure these cars perform as they should on the road.

Chris Tolman, founder of Tolman Engineering, explains: “Even with the best intentions, not exercising a car, especially those increasing in value, can lead to more headaches.

“Rubber components like belts, seals, and fuel lines deteriorate over time, making them unsafe or unreliable.

“When properly sorted, these cars deliver a rewarding driving experience.”

Tolman’s approach of non-invasive enhancements combined with contemporary engineering solutions has already attracted demand from owners of other motorsport cars, including a Group A Mitsubishi Lancer and a historic MGB rally car.

By carefully combining original specification parts with new engineering solutions, Tolman Engineering ensures these rare cars are not just preserved but fully usable and enjoyable, allowing owners to experience the true spirit of Group B rallying on today’s roads.
