Garage Hive helps independents prepare for SERMI with new compliance tools

Garage Hive has introduced a new system update designed to help independent workshops manage the compliance demands of the UK’s Security-related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) scheme, which goes live on Wednesday (1 April).

Developed in partnership with Mark Webb of Garage Vitals, the update embeds SERMI processes directly into the workshop workflow, addressing what many are describing as the most significant shift in vehicle security access in a generation.

The scheme replaces individual manufacturer security certificates with a single ‘digital passport’ for technicians and introduces strict audit requirements. Workshops must collect and retain proof of vehicle ownership, customer identification and written authorisation for every security-related job, including immobiliser work, key coding and ECU updates.

“The RMI can carry out unannounced spot checks at any time,” said Mark. “If a business cannot provide the required documentation within six days, it risks losing its SERMI licence.”

What is SERMI? Everything independent garages need to know

Recognising the administrative burden this creates, Garage Hive has developed new compliance tools directly into its management system. Service advisors can request customer documents in advance via automated pre-check-in messages, allowing V5 and ID uploads before the vehicle arrives on site.

Technicians are required to verify the vehicle by entering the final four digits of the VIN before security-related work can proceed, creating an additional layer of accountability. All associated documentation is then automatically stored within the digital job sheet for five years, ensuring workshops remain audit-ready.

“SERMI is a big change for garages,” said Ray Dilsons, Managing Director of Garage Hive. “We’ve focused on making sure compliance fits into the way workshops already operate, rather than adding extra admin.”

SERMI accreditation, administered in the UK by RMI Standards and Certification (RMISC), costs £30 per month for the core business, with an additional flat fee of £125 per technician. The accreditation is valid for a five-year period.
