£19m EV training hub set to deliver 650 new technicians to the trade

A massive £19 million investment in a state-of-the-art automotive college has signalled a major boost for the independent aftermarket’s future talent pipeline, specifically targeting the high-voltage skills gap.

Bradford College has unveiled its new Motor Vehicle & Engineering building at the Junction Mills site in West Yorkshire.

Set to officially open in September, the four-storey facility is custom-built to train up to 650 students in electric and hybrid vehicle maintenance, modern automotive digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Proving that demand for modern, tech-focused workshop careers is high among school leavers, college officials report that applications for some courses have already reached 80% capacity.

The project represents a significant government commitment to automotive trades, funded primarily by a £17.8 million grant from the Department for Education’s Further Education Capital Transformation Fund, alongside a £1.5 million contribution from the college.

Chris Malish of Bradford College noted that the facility will be equipped with the latest automotive technology to prepare students directly for the workshop floor.

“What we’re addressing is the big need to move students into employment, so this will have a massively positive impact not just for our students but businesses too,” Malish said. “We’ll be at the forefront of these studies because we’ll have all the new technology, and we’ve got some great partners coming on board.”

The site is also the only new build project in Yorkshire to attain a platinum certification for outstanding carbon savings, aligning with its curriculum focus on the low-carbon economy.

Morgan Sindall Construction, the firm behind the build, confirmed that the main structure is complete, with full site finalization expected by the end of June.

The strategic challenge for local independent garages will now be engaging with educational hubs like Bradford College to secure this new wave of EV-ready talent before they are recruited by main dealer networks.
