Independent garage owners are being encouraged to listen to the latest episode of The Blend Podcast, where two-time Small Garage of the Year winner Gary Wood of Intelligent Auto opens up about his late diagnosis, management strategies, and why neurodivergent minds can bring unique strengths to diagnostic work.
Speaking to podcast host Mike Ruff, Gary reflects on his transition from a mobile technician to running an award-winning independent garage in Gateshead, while sharing how a personal journey of self-discovery has changed the way he views himself and his team.
It comes ahead of Gary’s breakout session at The Blend 2026, where he will take to the stage on Saturday, 10 October 2026 in Birmingham to explore neurodiversity, management and the untapped strengths within garages.
“Gary brings a completely different perspective to a subject that affects far more garages than many owners probably realise,” said Mike Ruff. “His experience shows that understanding how people think isn’t just about being a better employer. It can change how a workshop operates, how technicians perform, and ultimately how a business delivers.”
Gary’s own experience began around four years ago, when his son was assessed for autism. Recognising traits in himself prompted Gary to look more closely at his own career, management style and day-to-day working patterns, eventually leading him to pursue a formal adult diagnosis for his own peace of mind and validation.
The episode explores why workshops can naturally attract people with neurodivergent traits, particularly in highly technical areas such as diagnostics, where intense focus, problem-solving and the ability to work through complex faults can become significant strengths.
“You speak to anybody who’s actually neurodiverse, and if someone says ‘everyone’s a little bit autistic,’ it’s a real myth,” said Gary. “If you understand how your staff think, you can manage them better. That technician who might come across as argumentative or disruptive but once you understand why they react the way they do, you can adapt, and their whole attitude changes.”
The Blend Podcast is available on all major podcast platforms.
