Two in three UK drivers suffer garage anxiety, survey reveals

More than two in three UK drivers (68%) admit to feeling anxious about taking their car to a workshop at least some of the time, according to new research from warranty specialist Warrantywise.

The nationwide survey of 2,000 motorists reveals that consumer apprehension begins well before a technician even connects a diagnostic tool.

Unforeseen repair costs represent the primary driver of this unease, cited by 80% of anxious motorists, while nearly half (49%) worry they will be overcharged as soon as a warning light appears on their dashboard.

Much of this friction stems from an information deficit rather than deep-seated mistrust.

Over a third of respondents (36%) stated they lack sufficient automotive knowledge to confidently discuss repairs with garages, leaving many feeling ill-equipped to understand service advice or assess whether a quote is fair.

With vehicles growing increasingly complex, this knowledge gap risks widening, causing hesitant motorists to delay critical maintenance until minor faults escalate into major component failures.

For workshop owners and service advisers, addressing these customer pain points directly offers a clear route to higher conversion rates, stronger retention, and fewer disputed bills.

The research also highlights that navigating third-party extended warranties smoothly remains a key customer reassurance.

Because covered repairs can be carried out at any VAT-registered workshop, garages that efficiently manage warranty claim procedures can capture additional aftersales business from drivers seeking protection against unexpected bills.

As independent workshops face their own rising operating pressures throughout 2026, transparent customer communication is becoming an essential tool to build trust, protect labor rates, and secure repeat trade.
