Independent recovery operators power Start Rescue to eighth consecutive Which crown

A network model built on contracted recovery agents and local workshops has once again outperformed the dedicated corporate fleets of the breakdown giants.

For the eighth consecutive year, Start Rescue, part of the Call Assist group, has secured Which? Recommended Provider status.

It was the only breakdown organisation in the latest annual survey to achieve a maximum five-star rating for value for money, alongside full five-star scores for customer service and the professional conduct of its attending mechanics.

Its sister brand, GEM Motoring Assist, mirrored that top five-star performance for roadside professionalism.

On paper, it looks like a clean sweep for a corporate breakdown brand. In reality, the boots on the ground doing the heavy lifting do not belong to a branded patrol fleet. They belong to independent vehicle recovery operators and workshop-based contractors.

Unlike the AA or the RAC, which rely primarily on their own liveried yellow and orange vans, Call Assist operates via a nationwide network of approved independent recovery specialists.

When stranded motorists award top marks for mechanical capability, roadside problem-solving, and professional conduct, that recognition directly reflects the competence of independent operators working under contract.

A key factor highlighted in this year’s survey was customer communication during stressful roadside incidents.

Motorists cited regular courtesy calls and status updates while waiting for a recovery truck as a decisive reason for their high satisfaction scores.

Securing Which? Recommended Provider status eight years running proves that an outsourced model, powered by independent commercial recovery operators, consistently matches or exceeds the service levels of the UK’s legacy motoring organisations.

Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue, acknowledged the role of contracted agents in securing the 2026 result: “Delivering the best service to our customers when they have experienced vehicle problems is always our goal, and this unprecedented eighth consecutive year of endorsement by the experts at Which? is a credit to the hard work from our staff, as well as all of our Vehicle Recovery Operatives and their staff across the network.”
