Few performance cars capture the essence of driving quite like the BMW M3 E92.
When it launched in the late 2000s, its naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 quickly established itself as one of the most evocative engines of its era: sharp, visceral and built for driving enthusiasts.
Now, Milltek Sport has developed a new valved cat-back exhaust system designed to elevate that character further, while creating fresh opportunities for workshops working with performance-minded customers.
The system, which fits all E9x-generation M3 models, the E90 Saloon, E92 Coupe and E93 Convertible, represents a significant step forward from the original factory exhaust.
While BMW’s OE twin-pipe design has long been admired, Milltek’s engineers have worked to produce a less restrictive, freer-breathing solution that transforms the car’s character on demand.
At the heart of the upgrade is switchable valve technology that allows drivers to tailor the exhaust note with a key fob.
In quiet mode, gases are channeled through dual rear silencers, toning down the V8’s growl for long journeys or urban use.
With the valves open, the silencers are bypassed entirely, unleashing a raucous soundtrack that showcases the engine’s full potential.
The exhaust tips, measuring a subtle 80mm in diameter, are available in polished stainless steel or a stealthier Cerakote black finish, ensuring the look remains true to the car’s timeless design.
Kev Hall, Technical Operations Manager at Milltek Sport, described the development as a chance to give enthusiasts the best of both worlds.
“The E92 M3 is what you might call a real driver’s car,” he explained. “It has stunning performance, pinpoint handling and even the OE exhaust sounds decent.
“But our system takes it to a new level. With the valves closed, it’s refined and composed, but hit the switch, floor the throttle and the valves open, suddenly you’re greeted with the most raucous, spine-tingling V8 note.
“It’s the sound of a performance car at its absolute best.”
Manufactured from high-grade T304L stainless steel at Milltek’s Derby facility, the new system carries a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser, underlining the company’s confidence in its durability and quality.
