If a customer brings a post-2020 Volvo into your workshop this week and mentions the dashboard looks completely different, it will be because Volvo Cars has officially launched one of the largest over-the-air (OTA) software updates in automotive history, rolling out a brand-new user experience (UX) to 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries.
The update, which is free of charge for any Volvo with Google built-in, effectively “refreshes” the tech stack of models as old as three years, bringing them in line with the flagship EX90.
The core of the Volvo Car UX update is a simplified, more intuitive layout for the central display. Based on Android Automotive, the new interface is designed to reduce the number of taps required to reach common functions.
Key Volvo software changes
– Persistent home screen: Maps, media, and phone controls are now all visible at once. Drivers no longer have to exit Google Maps just to change a music track.
– Contextual bar: A new smart bar that changes based on the driving situation. For example, if the car is moving at low speeds, the camera icon automatically appears to assist with parking.
– One-tap EV mode: For Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) owners, switching to ‘Pure’ electric mode is now a single tap on the home screen, making it easier for customers to manage their powertrains.
Perhaps the most significant “future-proofing” element of this update is that it prepares the vehicle’s hardware for Google Gemini.
Later this spring, these same eligible cars will receive an upgraded conversational AI experience, moving away from basic voice commands toward a more advanced, AI-driven assistant.
Volvo is also using this rollout to monetise its tech stack further. Customers who bought a car without Pilot Assist (Volvo’s level 2 driver assistance) can now purchase and download the feature directly to the vehicle, a clear sign of the growing “software as a service” trend.
Volvo has stated that OTA updates are only free if the car has been updated regularly. If a vehicle has missed several versions or lacks an active data connection, the owner may need to visit a min dealer to have the software manually pushed through, which could incur a fee.
