Cooper’s Mobile Mechanics: Ford Transit wet belt replacement

Cooper, of Cooper’s Mobile Mechanics, has released a detailed walkthrough of a wet belt replacement on the Ford EcoBlue engine, and it’s a masterclass in why cutting corners simply isn’t an option for independent pros.

Cooper advocates for a two-day workflow. While it might be tempting to rush the van out the door, he stresses that allowing the sealant on the new timing cover and sump to cure fully is the only way to ensure a leak-free result.

His process begins before a single bolt is turned, with a pre-work fault memory check. In this instance, he identified a low-pressure fuel system code early on—a vital step to ensure any pre-existing issues aren’t wrongly attributed to the timing belt work later.

The teardown is extensive, requiring the removal of everything from the driver’s side headlight to the starter motor to gain access.

A key takeaway for technicians is Cooper’s insistence on using a long bar rather than an impact gun on the 24mm crankshaft pulley bolt to avoid shaking components loose or causing internal damage.

Because the timing cover and sump are often sacrificed during the prying process, they are treated as mandatory replacement items.

On this specific vehicle, the belt and strainer were in surprisingly good health, a direct result, Cooper notes, of proactive maintenance and frequent oil changes.

After cleaning the block, the new belts are installed using specific timing pins and a crankshaft locking tool. Cooper’s commitment to “doing it right” is capped off by turning the engine over by hand 14 times to verify alignment before the final seal.
