Electrified platforms captured more than 56 per cent of the total August intake, but it is the rapid acceleration of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that presents the most immediate technical talking point for workshop bays.

Modern plug-in systems rely on intricate thermal management networks with multiple cooling loops, variable electric water pumps, and proportional solenoid valves to balance battery operating temperatures against engine and cabin heating demands.
Because combustion engines in PHEVs regularly switch on under sudden load without adequate warm-up cycles, technicians are increasingly encountering severe intake valve carbon fouling, sensor drift, and catalyst degradation alongside high-voltage isolation faults and battery contactor issues.
Independent workshops cannot simply treat high-voltage safety isolation as an alternative to combustion diagnostics; mastering oscilloscope analysis and pressure transducer testing remains just as essential as owning insulated tooling.
At the same time, the wider sales figures offer a sobering reality check on the actual pace of the zero-emission transition.
Although August produced a typical late-summer spike in BEV market share, year-to-date electric uptake remains at 25.6 percent, sitting well adrift of the government’s 33 percent headline mandate target.
Heavy retail discounting by vehicle manufacturers has done little to bridge that gap, prompting the SMMT to lobby ministers for a formal review to better align policy targets with real-world consumer appetite.
