September plate-change delivers EV surge

Newly registered electric cars on a forecourt, illustrating the September surge in the UK new car market figures.

September’s plate-change gave the UK new car market its strongest showing in nearly a decade, with registrations jumping 12.0% to 350,536 units.

According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the performance marks a 10th straight month of market growth and represents the best September haul since 2017.

The defining narrative of the month is the rapid influx of high-voltage powertrains hitting British roads. Electrified vehicles claimed a record 58.4% of all registrations in September.

Pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) broke records with 99,201 units, a 36.3% rise year-on-year that pushed pure electric share to 28.3%.

To put that run-rate into perspective, almost five brand-new BEVs rolled off dealer forecourts every minute throughout the month, supported by aggressive OEM retail subsidies and the Electric Car Grant.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also saw heavy uptake, surging 55.5% to take a 17.0% market share, while standard self-charging hybrids (HEVs) dipped slightly by 4.3% to settle at 13.1%.

With 178 BEV nameplates now on sale in the UK, alongside more than 110 PHEVs and 50 HEVs, electrified models now make up more than three-quarters of all new vehicle derivatives available.

Despite the volume records, the SMMT was quick to highlight the yawning gap between forecourt reality and Whitehall policy. Year-to-date BEV share sits at 26.2% (454,947 units), trailing well behind the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate requirement of 33% for 2026.

Based on an estimated full-year market of 2.183 million cars, hitting the statutory target without flexibilities would demand an unrealistic 265,000 pure EV registrations in Q4 alone.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “September’s record EV performance is a major achievement. Drivers are increasingly embracing the growing choice of models made available and high fuel prices are also undoubtedly giving more consumers reason to consider going electric.

“The industry’s commitment is clear with billions of pounds of investment in new models, new technology and incentives.

“Despite all these factors, uptake remains behind mandated targets and, whilst flexibilities help, the UK still has the world’s toughest targets and highest energy costs.

“The Mandate review is an opportunity to review those factors, to build on this momentum and support consumers but, in doing so, strengthen business viability and UK competitiveness.”

September proved that consumer appetite for alternative powertrains isn’t slowing down. For workshops, staying ahead means treating these new-plate registration numbers not as distant dealer statistics, but as the exact booking schedule heading for your bays tomorrow.
