‘It’s okay not to be all right’, says Edward Cockill in latest episode of The Blend Podcast

Independent garage owners are being encouraged to listen to the latest episode of The Blend Podcast, where Edward Cockill of Uckfield Motor Services delivers an honest and thought-provoking take on leadership, mental health, and what it really means to run a modern workshop.

In the episode, “It’s Okay Not to Be All Right”, Edward joins host Mike Ruff to share how opening up about his own struggles has reshaped both his leadership style and the culture at Uckfield Motor Services.

The conversation shines a light on a familiar issue in the garage industry: the tendency to deal with pressure behind closed doors. Edward explains why opening up has not only changed his leadership style, but strengthened his business.

“Running a garage can be tough, and for a long time I thought I just had to get on with it,” he said. “But once you start talking, you realise you’re not the only one. That’s when things begin to change.”

The episode explores how expectations in the workshop are shifting, particularly among younger technicians who respond better to support and understanding than traditional top-down management. Edward outlines how creating a culture where people feel comfortable speaking up has improved communication, trust, and ultimately performance.

Rather than seeing empathy as a weakness, he makes a clear business case for it. By supporting his team through challenging periods, including adapting working patterns and encouraging external help from organisations such as Ben, Edward has seen first-hand how investing in people delivers long-term results.

“You can push people hard for a short period,” he explained, “but if you want consistency and loyalty, you’ve got to look after them. When your team’s in a good place, the business follows.”

Alongside the people-focused message, the episode also highlights isolation. Edward reflects on how connecting with other garage owners has helped him gain perspective, test ideas, and realise that many of the challenges he faces are shared across the industry.

“Ed brings a level of honesty that really connects,” said Mike Ruff. “This episode will resonate with anyone who’s ever felt the weight of running a business and wondered if they’re the only one dealing with it.”
