Baz Meredith of YouTube channel baz meredith tackles a total loss of clutch pedal on a 180,000-mile Land Rover Defender 90, tracing the issue to a failed hydraulic slave cylinder.
With the pedal dropping straight to the floor, an initial inspection underneath revealed dark fluid weeping from the bellhousing. Undoing the two 10mm securing bolts confirmed that fluid had escaped past the internal piston seal.
Disassembly showed moisture contamination had corroded a ring of rust into the cylinder bore, chewing through the rubber seal as the plunger moved back and forth.
After thoroughly scrubbing the reservoir, Baz fitted a fresh TRW slave unit, carefully realigned the hydraulic pipework to prevent kinks, and hooked up a pressure bleeder at two bar to flush the circuit.
A road test confirmed crisp gear engagement without needing a full gearbox drop, demonstrating how neglected fluid changes quietly rot hydraulic internals from the inside out.
