RMS Diagnostics tackles a baffling convertible roof failure on an Audi A3 Cabriolet, where the roof cycles but the motor keeps buzzing and the windows refuse to execute their final roll-up sequence.
Using a ThinkCar 399 scanner, the team pulled fault code 01092, pointing to the F171 open position switch. Accessing VAG binary block coding on live data channel 001 confirmed the final digit failed to change state.
Wiring diagrams showed the two-wire hall sensors should shift between 2.6V and 7V. Back-probing the boot-mounted multi-plug and waving a metal pick over the sensor confirmed the component was functional, indicating a wiring issue.
Using a borescope down a tight chassis channel, they found a fractured wiring loom at the split to the sensors. The broken wire created an implausible signal as the loom flexed during the roof’s final downward travel.
Working in restricted space with long-reach tools, the technician soldered new wire sections away from the flex points. This restored the circuit, allowing the system to complete its cycle and automatically roll up the windows.
