Ross Maitland details startup journey and staff retention on On The Ramp podcast

Maitland Motors founder Ross Maitland joined Alex Lindley and Tim Guidotti on the On The Ramp podcast to discuss building a six-strong workshop team after launching with just £200 in 2016.

Ross recounted walking away from dealership and independent technician roles after repeated broken promises over diagnostic training and discovering he was paid £3 less per hour than technicians he tried to recruit.

Securing a single-bay unit in Burntisland with family-backed rent, Maitland Motors survived an empty diary less than a year in thanks to an unexpected taxi fleet service job and late Thursday evening opening hours.

Investing in Euro Car Parts’ £1,000 unlimited training package proved pivotal, completing £16,000 worth of technical courses in year one and connecting Ross with industry figures Steve Scott and Darren Darling.

Now operating three ramps with six staff, Maitland prioritises continuous staff training and proactive conflict resolution, once sending two clashing technicians to lunch with £200 and five rules to settle their differences.
