SERMI clarified for garages as Hella Gutmann issues practical guidance

As independent workshops continue to adapt to the Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) framework introduced earlier this year, Hella Gutmann has issued practical guidance to clarify what the system means for day-to-day workshop operations.

While SERMI introduced a standardised digital authentication process for accessing manufacturer security-related functions, Hella Gutmann is reassuring garages that the vast majority of routine servicing, maintenance and diagnostics remain unaffected.

For workshops using Hella Gutmann diagnostic platforms, including the mega macs S 20, mega macs PLUS and mega macs X, everyday tasks such as servicing, oil changes, brake repairs and general fault diagnosis can continue exactly as before, with no SERMI authorisation required. The framework only applies when technicians need to access original equipment (OE) manufacturer portals to carry out security-related coding, programming and configuration work.

To support workshops in these scenarios, Hella Gutmann’s macsRemote Service provides a SERMI-compliant route through manufacturer security systems. The service manages the connection to OE manufacturer portals while maintaining a secure and fully auditable authentication process.

“Hella Gutmann is fully accredited under the SERMI framework,” said Julian Goulding, Head of Garage Equipment at Hella Gutmann. “We’ve integrated the SERMI authentication process directly into our existing macsRemote workflow, allowing garages to continue carrying out advanced repairs with minimal disruption while meeting the latest manufacturer security requirements.”

The workflow is initiated when a technician requests remote support for a coding, programming or adaptation task. Where SERMI applies, a Hella Gutmann remote technician first verifies the organisation’s SERMI accreditation before sending a secure authentication request to the workshop. The technician then confirms their individual SERMI credentials via the Digidentity smartphone app by scanning a one-time QR code. Once both parties have been validated, access to the manufacturer security gateway is granted and the procedure can proceed.

“The entire authentication process typically takes around two minutes and is linked specifically to the individual vehicle being worked on,” explained Julian.
