One in five drivers delay repairs, AA Charitable Trust warns

Drivers are being urged to prioritise essential maintenance this Road Safety Week, as new data reveals that a significant number are delaying critical repairs that keep vehicles safe on the road.

The warning comes from The AA Charitable Trust, which is supporting Brake’s Road Safety Week 2025 campaign running from 16-22 November, under the theme “Safe Vehicles Save Lives.”

To mark this year’s event, the Trust has highlighted the important role that routine maintenance plays in preventing road casualties.

A recent AA survey of more than 13,000 motorists found that 22% put off essential repairs flagged during MOTs or inspections because they “didn’t have the time,” while 59% admitted cost was the main reason for delaying vital work.

The survey also revealed that 46% of drivers would postpone replacing worn tyres or suspension components, despite these parts being fundamental to a vehicle’s handling and stability.

The AA Charitable Trust is encouraging motorists to act promptly on advice from their garage.

Edmund King, Director of The AA Charitable Trust, said: “Every year, thousands of lives are lost or changed forever due to road crashes. This year’s theme, ‘Safe Vehicles Save Lives’, is a powerful reminder that road safety doesn’t just sit with the driver. It starts with the vehicle itself.

“After regular household bills, for those who rely on their car, the safety of their vehicle, its occupants and other road users should be high on their list of priorities.”

Road Safety Week is organised by Brake and is the UK’s largest annual road safety campaign, uniting schools, emergency services, communities and organisations to raise awareness and help prevent avoidable tragedies on the road.
