The UK independent garage sector is on the brink of a major breakthrough. The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has received a recommendation for approval from UKAS to launch the Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) scheme in the UK, opening doors that have long been closed to independents.
Until now, access to critical security-related vehicle data, such as key coding, ECU programming, and software downloads, was largely restricted to franchised dealerships. SERMI changes that, introducing a centralised audit and certification system that allows certified independent garages to securely access essential manufacturer information without navigating multiple systems.
The scheme, adapted for the UK from its European counterpart, has been developed in collaboration with the UK Government and vehicle manufacturers. After more than a decade of advocacy by the IGA, independent garages finally have a pathway to compete on equal footing.
Stuart James, IGA Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted that after many years the scheme has finally come to fruition.
“Subject to final documents being issued, we anticipate it going live this year. SERMI not only simplifies access to vital security-related data but also highlights the professionalism of certified garages.
“Participation is vital for the future success and competitiveness of independent operators.”
Since 2009, the IGA has pushed relentlessly for fair access to manufacturer data. The launch of SERMI represents the culmination of that effort and a major step toward a more competitive aftermarket.
James added: “This initiative is a bold affirmation of the role independent garages play in the UK automotive ecosystem. We’ve set it up on a not-for-profit basis so the benefits go directly to independent garages. We encourage all independents to seize this opportunity and be part of meaningful progress in the industry.”
