The Car Edition reveals plans for new ‘Track Day’ build series

The Car Edition podcast has unveiled its latest project: a competitive track car build series featuring the team and several high-profile guest creators – and if you were at a certain garage network conference recently, you might be able to guess who at least one of those guests might be!

The project focuses on transforming budget-friendly vehicles into high-performance track machines, highlighting a variety of technical approaches from high-revving naturally aspirated setups to complex automatic gearbox conversions.

In the latest episode, the team—including Akash, Big Drew, and Gus—reveal the specific vehicles and modifications planned for the series.

The project is designed to demonstrate real-world performance builds on realistic budgets, with the team exploring everything from engine balancing to fiberglass weight reduction.

Akash detailed his plans for a Mazda MX5, focusing on a high-revving naturally aspirated engine.

His build aims for a 9,500rpm limit, requiring balanced internals, lighter pistons and conrods, and a ported cylinder head with a strengthened valve train.

This traditional approach to power contrasts with the host’s more experimental MX5 build, which features a 2.5-litre ‘You-Pull-It’ engine from Copart, forged internals, and a Pulsar G-series 660 turbocharger.

A significant technical highlight of the discussion was the integration of a BMW 8HP45 automatic gearbox into the MX5.

The team discussed the benefits of this modern transmission over older manual units, noting its speed and torque capacity.

The conversion involves sourcing specific parts from 2015–2017 Jaguar XE petrol models to facilitate the swap, alongside custom propshafts and mounting kits from specialist fabricators.

Big Drew’s Renault Clio provides a different perspective on track preparation, focusing heavily on weight reduction and chassis width.

His ‘Smurf-blue’ build features extensive fiberglass replacement panels—including the bonnet, doors, and tailgate, alongside 60mm front and 80mm rear spacers.

Mechanically, the Clio utilises a 1.8-litre engine swap, a limited-slip differential (LSD), and a simplified fuel system.

The series is expected to expand with guest appearances from other automotive influencers, including Hard Up Garage, Petrolheadonism, and Dans Automotive.

The team is currently scouting for UK track locations that can accommodate a dedicated racing event, including potential spectator access and community track sessions.
